Survival Of The Fittess, Who is Going To Win? Kings Or “UnderDogs”

Is the habit of artistes signing their fellow artistes to their label healthy? Of course, this has its advantages but for me, I believe the disadvantages outweigh the good things they get if an artiste especially, an upcoming act signs to a record label owned by another artiste in the same industry,

In as much as it helps the artiste being signed tap from the fan base of the one with the label, being signed onto a label involves more than just tapping into the fan base of your senior label mate. Many people have argued that ever since Efya and R2bees signed with Wizkids label, we haven’t heard much from them. I am not well informed about what went into their contract so I would not stress much on it.

First of all, for an artiste to have a record label, then that particular artiste has done so well over the years and has harnessed big influence in music both Locally and Internationally. My problem is even with that influence; the signed artiste still seems more “underground” than when he was not signed to the label. What could the problem be?

Despite all these challenges, it looks like more artistes are now signing the younger once onto their labels but still we are not really seeing much of these younger ones. Will a rapper sign a rapper and promote him to be above him?No, I disagree. It’s a competition, each one for himself.

I will also say maybe there is misplaced priority on the side of the management of theses record labels. What I mean is, the label is slow to see who needs the most attention.
So instead of the label focusing on their biggest brand all the time, I believe if the same or greater attention is given to the younger once they will also be big.

I think it’s good for the big artiste to sign the younger once but it shouldn’t be from the same category. Example a rapper signing another rapper in the case of Sarkodie and Strongman. Now both have been nominated for best rapper in the VGMA 2017. Who’s gonna promote who?? That is why i think it should be a rapper signing a singer so they can always collaborate and hype each other.

I would like to ask this question before I end. Is It Healthy for an Artiste to Sign Another Artiste Who Does the Same Genre Of Music? Let us know in the comment section below.
